Retired HPD K9 Riko passes away

It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of one of our retired K-9s, Riko. He passed away on November 25th.

Riko joined the Hoover PD family in September of 2015, and partnered with Officer Brian Golson. His primary job was narcotics detection, but he was also trained as a dual purpose K9. Riko was responsible for countless arrests in his distinguished career. He retired in 2021.

Until the end, Riko enjoyed retirement life with Officer Golson and his family. Interestingly enough, Riko got to be best friends with Officer Golson’s current K9 partner, Rip. While the first few months were a little rough, the two ended up sharing the same bed a lot of the time. Riko remained the alpha male at the house though. If Rip was walking around with a toy, Riko would take the toy away and walk circles around him with it!

Officer Golson shared, “Riko was the best partner I’ve ever had. He loved to go to work. At home, as soon as he saw me in my uniform, he would start barking and jumping around. He knew it was time to jump in the Tahoe and go to work.”

“At home he was a very loving and affectionate dog. He was great with my family, friends, neighbors and other dogs. With as tough as he was, we always knew when storm was coming because all of a sudden he wanted to be a lap dog. He will be missed.”

Thank you for your service, Riko.

Good boy. Job well done. Rest in peace, we’ll take the Watch from here.
