retired hpd k9 niko passes away

For the second time in less than a month, it is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of one of our retired K-9s, Niko. He passed away in his sleep on January 2nd.

Niko previously served as a police K9 in Nebraska prior to being paired with Officer Howell in 2017. While working, Niko was involved in multiple narcotics seizures and was an integral part of the Hoover PD K9 Unit. He retired from police work in 2021. Niko was able to enjoy several years of retirement as a valued member of the Howell family.

Officer Howell said that Niko had a great temperament and loved attention. He was very vocal whenever he wanted something. And as is the case with police dogs, they know when it’s time to go to work. Officer Howell said, “As soon as Niko would see me with my uniform on in the morning, he ran straight for the garage door to get into his Tahoe.”

Thank you for your service, Niko. There is no doubt you made the Hoover community a safer place.

Good boy. Job well done. Rest in peace, we’ll take the Watch from here.
