Hoover public Safety center

The Hoover Public Safety Center is located at 2020 Valleydale Road. In addition to housing the Hoover City Jail, Police Records, Police Communications and the Hoover Municipal Court, the PSC is quickly becoming a home to numerous public safety related operations. In 2006, the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences opened a new facility in the PSC to replace the department’s offices that were previously located on the campus of UAB. In 2007, the United States Secret Service, in conjunction with the State of Alabama, opened a technical center designed to train law enforcement personnel in the art of computer forensics. Moreover, the PSC houses Hoover’s new 911 operations center that features a “state of the art” communications facility providing dispatch and call taking services for the Hoover Police Department and the Hoover Fire Department.

The Bluff Park Substation

At a meeting between Bluff Park residents and business owners with representatives of the Hoover Police Department on September 12th, 2006 residents said they have been concerned about crime increases in the area for some time. Two armed robberies that occurred at Shades Mountain Plaza, however, prompted residents and business owners to seek additional police resources leading to the opening of the new police sub-station on December 07, 2006.

The first of these robberies occurred at Baker’s Famous Pizza at 757 Shades Mountain Plaza on January 23, 2006. According to the victim, a black male entered the business armed with a handgun and demanded money. There were no physical injuries reported due to this robbery. After exiting the store, the black male was last seen running west toward the Piggly Wiggly. An arrest for this robbery has not been made.

A second robbery occurred at the Piggly Wiggly located at 770 Shades Mountain Plaza on August 12, 2006. In this robbery, one victim reported two black male suspects armed with handguns rushed into the store shouting “give me the cash!” As in the pizza store robbery, both suspects had their faces masked prohibiting victims from making an identification. After exiting the rear of the store, these suspects were last seen driving away in a Mercury passenger car which was later located by Hoover Police Detectives. There were no physical injuries reported to police stemming from this robbery. Hoover Police were able to develop suspects for this robbery both of whom were later arrested for a similar crime committed in Bessemer on August 22nd. These suspects, however, have not been charged with the Hoover robbery of the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on August 12th.

Field Operations bureau

Renovated in 2006 for 1.5 million dollars, the Hoover Police Department’s operations building is once again serving as the headquarters for the police department’s patrol division. Located at 3142 Lorna Road (behind Hoover Commons), the former movie theater has been transformed into a “state of the art” police facility.

Just a few of the improvements to the Police Operations Building include:

  • An expanded locker room with approximately one-hundred lockers (before there were a total of eight) including new restroom facilities equipped with showers.
  • Dedicated roll call room that contains a computer system linked to police CAD.
  • A large training room that comfortably seats seventy people. The training room has been outfitted with an Audio Visual System that has an integrated sound system with the ability to provide video and DVD to enhance the training experience.
  • Numerous conference rooms and supervisors offices have been added where none existed before. In addition to the professional decor that is apart of all of the new office space, the design also included windows for most of the offices and all of the conference rooms!
