DNA From Cigarette Butt Leads to Car Burglary Arrest

On September 12, 2016, Hoover Police responded to Hendrick Chevrolet on a report of a car break-in. The victim dropped his vehicle off for service a few days earlier and returned to retrieve an item. He discovered that someone had unlawfully entered the vehicle and attempted to steal the radio. Hoover Police Crime Scene Investigators were called to the scene to process the vehicle and they located a cigarette butt in the passenger compartment. The victim told officers he did not smoke, and the cigarette butt was collected as evidence. It was then submitted to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for DNA testing. A DNA profile was obtained and submitted into CODIS. Detectives were notified last week of a positive match for the DNA sample that was collected. The suspect was identified as Joshua Lee Ginn, a 22 year-old male from West Blocton, Alabama. Ginn was charged with the following:

Joshua Lee Ginn _______________________22 years old__________________________West Blocton, AL

-    Unlawful Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle                      $ 10,000.00 Bond

Ginn is currently in custody in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on an unrelated charge.
